The fast bowler Poised for a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Test match action

The Australian skipper has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

The Australian chair of selectors the selector has stated that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on November 21 in Perth.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about his chances of taking part.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and various factors around that, aside from the physical problem, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a key capacity. Hopefully starting in Perth. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand recently after scans revealed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons forcing him out of three Australian summers in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but conceded it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "small issue and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the initial matches anyway. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
