Tetris Couldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category May Address This Issue

Each time a significant honors show nears, there’s always an outcry for introducing of new categories to recognize unsung work and delight the passions of fans who have specialized interests.

My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front because like all dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing above others. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession for the industry of video games, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories successfully include many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home at major award shows, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked completely during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Just some logic titles barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're modest productions, however the design behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among the most-played games in the world maintaining this status for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and engaging across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. You could fill multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge game development, producing among most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
