2K Games has welcomed a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to lead the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently working on the anticipated over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.
Leadership Shift Follows Lukewarm Response
The new appointee takes on the leadership position at 31st Union following the departure of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' underwhelming unveiling last autumn.
On Wednesday, 2K president a key figure notified employees about this strategic move through an internal memo, which stressed that playtesting had indicated the requirement for a more defined direction.
Ismailer noted that the developers is now overhauling Project Ethos with a revised approach, aiming to better meet player expectations.
A Pattern of Strategic Recruitment
The news mirrors a similar step taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to contribute to the BioShock development group.
Below is the complete message from the president's communication:
Team—
I know you all just completed your town hall - I trust you’re as thrilled as I am with the recent updates. Previously I shared you all a note, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this team. You all are some of the most dedicated and talented developers we have had the pleasure to work with - and we’re excited for that collaboration to continue.”
Given your hard work and flexibility, especially over the last year, you repeatedly show that.
The player input from last fall’s the game testing phase was enlightening. It validated the appeal of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had improvements to make. It revealed the need for a more distinct vision.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve advanced. You took the criticism to mind and overhauled Project ETHOS with a revitalized vision - one that’s ready to fulfill its potential to our audience.
The belief in Project ETHOS grows every day. To further the remarkable advancement you’ve made, It is a pleasure to introduce Ben Brinkman as the incoming Lead of the team. After a period of conversations, Ben starts with us on next week.
His guidance and experience in the competitive gaming space is vast, having spent the past decade and a half creating and leading some of the most popular series in the industry, for example the acclaimed shooter, and most recently, the battle royale hit.
Please join me in receiving Ben next week. We are all excited to keep seeing the evolution of the game in the weeks to ahead.
David
